Up and Down
In 1953, one day before the Korean Armistice Agreement, two Chinese young peasants decide to join the Chinese People’s Volunteer Army. Wu Xiu-quan is hesitant because he is the only son and he has a young child bride of seven years waiting to marry him. Wu Xiu-bang, his cousin, convinces him that joining the army would bring honor to his family. The cousins hiked over night to get to the enlist office by the Yangtze River, only to be told that the Korean War has ended. They were sent home. Wu Xiu-quan’s father captured him and gives him a good thrashing. After Xiu-quan and Fenr get married. Xiu-quan deceived Fenr and they never consummate the marriage. The secret is discovered at the wedding banquet. After that, Xiu-quan is forced to consummate the marriage with Fenr, who is pregnant soon. Xiu-quan leaves the village to work in a grain station in town. His father comes to find him and stages a scene, forcing Xiu-quan to quit the job in town. When Xiu-quan arrives home, his first son is born. And he decides to stay in the village to help organizing the socialization of agricultural production

An experimental and distributional investigation of two ‘non-culminating accomplishments’ in Mandarin
The result-state lexicalization behavior of Mandarin monomorphemic transitive verbs have been claimed to be homogenous, with the vast majority contributing to ‘non-culminating’ readings in accomplishment predicates. This paper presents experimental and distributional case studies of verbs expected to challenge this claim: xiu ‘fix’ and sha ‘kill’. An experiment was conducted to examine how contextual factors influence result-state interpretation, given reports of highly variable judgments for these verbs when considered a-contextually. The results suggests that while xiu NP ‘fix NP’ is a true non-culminating accomplishment, sha NP ‘kill NP’ may lexicalize a result-state culmination, contra claims in prior work. These experimental findings are supported by the distribution of the verbs in Mandarin VV compounds, which suggest that xiu ‘fix’ is a manner verb (thereby not lexicalizing result-state culmination), while sha ‘kill’ is a result verb (lexicalizing result-state culmination). This study not only highlights the benefit of considering how contextual factors influence interpretations of verbal meaning, but it could also suggest that claims of the pervasiveness of non-culminating accomplishments in Mandarin are exaggerated
Construction and separability of nonlinear soliton integrable couplings
A very natural construction of integrable extensions of soliton systems is
presented. The extension is made on the level of evolution equations by a
modification of the algebra of dynamical fields. The paper is motivated by
recent works of Wen-Xiu Ma et al. (Comp. Math. Appl. 60 (2010) 2601, Appl.
Math. Comp. 217 (2011) 7238), where new class of soliton systems, being
nonlinear integrable couplings, was introduced. The general form of solutions
of the considered class of coupled systems is described. Moreover, the
decoupling procedure is derived, which is also applicable to several other
coupling systems from the literature.Comment: letter, 10 page
Decay estimates and a vanishing phenomenon for the solutions of critical anisotropic equations
We investigate the asymptotic behavior of solutions of anisotropic equations
of the form
in , where for all and is a
Caratheodory function with critical Sobolev growth. This problem arises in
particular from the study of extremal functions for a class of anisotropic
Sobolev inequalities. We establish decay estimates for the solutions and their
derivatives, and we bring to light a vanishing phenomenon which occurs when the
maximum value of the exponents exceeds a critical value.Comment: Final version to appear in Advances in Mathematic
Intrinsic Taylor formula for Kolmogorov-type homogeneous groups
We consider a class of ultra-parabolic Kolmogorov-type operators satisfying
the Hormander's condition. We prove an intrinsic Taylor formula with global and
local bounds for the remainder given in terms of the norm in the homogeneous
Lie group naturally associated to the differential operator
Threshold Saturation in Spatially Coupled Constraint Satisfaction Problems
We consider chains of random constraint satisfaction models that are
spatially coupled across a finite window along the chain direction. We
investigate their phase diagram at zero temperature using the survey
propagation formalism and the interpolation method. We prove that the SAT-UNSAT
phase transition threshold of an infinite chain is identical to the one of the
individual standard model, and is therefore not affected by spatial coupling.
We compute the survey propagation complexity using population dynamics as well
as large degree approximations, and determine the survey propagation threshold.
We find that a clustering phase survives coupling. However, as one increases
the range of the coupling window, the survey propagation threshold increases
and saturates towards the phase transition threshold. We also briefly discuss
other aspects of the problem. Namely, the condensation threshold is not
affected by coupling, but the dynamic threshold displays saturation towards the
condensation one. All these features may provide a new avenue for obtaining
better provable algorithmic lower bounds on phase transition thresholds of the
individual standard model
